Talking about Art and Composition: Albert Pinkham Ryder
March 1, 2021
This 8 ½ minute video is taken from a longer video recording dealing with looking at art; how we look at it and what we can say, experience and learn from that looking. This was recorded during a live online class that I held from 2020 to 2021.
We spent nearly 9 minutes discussing this piece and after viewing the excerpt numerous times I discovered there is so much more that can be said about this intimate little gem of a painting by Albert Pinkham Ryder!
In this clip the following are mentioned: contrasts, negative space, movement, subtle color shifts; and importantly how we experience art on an emotional level. I ask in the end how do the elements of what goes into making an artwork affect the overall experience of viewing the artwork?
